Correlation Between C-rective Protein, Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate and Leukocytes in Infections of Infancy and Childhood

Abstract
Body temperature and several laboratory tests including C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, leukocyte count and the percentage of neutrophils were determined on total 106 cases (male; 63, female; 43) of infectious disease which were admitted to the pediatric department of Seoul Red Gross Hospital during the period of 1 year from January to December 1982.
Following results were obtained and observed the correlation between those tests.
1) Abnormal findings of these tests were observed as follows: CRP in 59..43%, ESR in 43.40%, percentage of neutrophil leukocytes in 51.89% noted the high significance in diagnosis of infectious diseases but 26.42% and 29.25% of-cases had elevated leukocyte count and temperature, respectively.
2) The incidence of positive reaction of CRP has no difference by the age but elevation of ESR was noted in a few cases below the age of 1 year.
3) The elevation of ESR, and the percentage of neutrophil leukocytes had a close relationship with the incidence of positive reactions of CRP and the intensity of CRP also parallels with the levels of ESR and the percentage of neutrophil leukocyte.
4) There was-no close correlation between the incidence of positive reaction of ,CRP, body temperature and the leukocyte count but. the intensity of the positive reaction of CRP was high temperature group.
5) The incidence. of positive reactions of CRP was high in the bacterial infections such as septicemia (100%), shigellosis (100%), typhoid fever (83.33%), pneumonia (76.92%), acute tonsillitis (71.43%) and urinary tract infection (66.67%), in contrast to viral infection in which the incidence of positive reactions was below, upper respiratory infection(40%), acute¢¥ gastroenteritis (16.67%) and hepatitis (16.67%).
